Local Kid Friendly Events

There are a couple of events coming up in the area that will be kid friendly. The first is this weekend on the 9th. It is a fundraiser for Watson Children's Shelter. The kids and I rode the Maclay loop last year. Info Here.

Another event is in Helena on Sunday, May 17th - Unravel the Scratchgravel. Our friend Chad is in charge of this new cross country race and has indicated it will be very kid friendly. 70 percent of the course is double track.

So, grab the kids and do some riding. Lots of local opportunities.

Thank you for working to get kids involved in outdoor sports like mtbs. I'm not much of a rider, but I also appreciate your efforts on the motorized distinction--I'm OK with the traditional wilderness designation, but banning bikes from the usual horse & hiking trails, gated roads, etc is over the top. In some areas of the country (Moab?) there might be enough traffic for user conflicts, but that doesn't seem to be a problem here. I feel the same away about those who ban dogs from Xski trails, but I digress...

My buddy Max came up from Brighton (where he patrols) and we got in a great ride last night in the Rattlesnake area here. I've noticed some new no dogs signs (one last night was pulled down by someone)in that area. I've never walked my labs in the Rattlesnake, but those signs bother me. They are not signs that say dogs must be on a leash. They are no dogs period on certain trails. I always break for dogs. Maybe it is for the equestians?

On the kid issue. It is a shame that mtb racing is so expensive. I know for sure there would be more kids in the sport if it was not a fortune repairing bikes and traveling to races. It's great to just get kids on the bikes and into the outdoors - and very healthy. As a nation we are in a crisis, with diabetes skyrocketing.

On riding a bicycle in the woods -there should be no law against bicycling in the woods. Ride responsibly and respect all trail users (even dogs)! Having some trails designated hiker only is ok with me, but an outright ban on thousands of acres?
